Skinned Deep film analysis

Skinned Deep, an American horror film written and directed by Gabriel Bartalos and released in 2004 is highly recommended to those who love of the horror genre. The Rockwell family is lost along the highway , and end up staying with an oddball family. This family consists one mother and her three sons who are known as Brain, Plates, and Surgeon General (Jason Dugre and Warwick Davis respectively) (Kurt Carley). As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that the family members are involved in illegal activities and poses the risk to the Rockwells. The revelation is no surprise.

Skinned Deep is an unforgettable horror film thanks to its over-the-top set pieces, its funny moments, and its lightning-fast cutting. The humor and the speed of the film was praised by the reviewer from Variety, Dennis Harvey, who described the movie as "funny and extremely repetitive." However, Steve Barton of Dread Central did not give the film 2.5 stars, citing the excessive use of cliches from the past and a predictable narrative as the reason for his rating. Because of its special effects, an aesthetic that is reminiscent of 80s style, and fast pace, Ryan Larson of Bloody Disgusting described it as "one that is among the top outrageous horror films from the decade."



The slim budget that the film had was not going to stop Bartalos from putting together a horror movie in the style of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre or The Hills Have Eyes. Instead, the filmmaker improvised a science fiction/slasher combination which is incomprehensible as well as completely off the mark. Bartalos's previously worked on the special effects for the well-known horror movies like "Frankenhooker" as well as "Brain Damage" prior to his involvement in "Skinned Deep" is evidence of his love for the esoteric.
